PR Writing Reading Notes Chapter 14 November 30, 2010

We skipped Chapter 13 in our book and moved ahead to Chapter 14 which discusses how to properly write emails, memos, and proposals. This is very important to get your news and publications published. If they are written crappy then nobody will want to take the time to redo it to publish it or claim it newsworthy, and most likely won’t want to work with you in the future either.

– You don’t want to send out anything with an information overload. Too much will make people lose their attention.

– Email is less formal than a letter, but more formal than a telephone call and should still contain a professional format to get information across.

– Memos should be one page or less and state the purpose immediately.

 

PR Writing Reading Notes Chapter 12

Chapter 12 in our text is about Tapping the Web and New Media. What does this mean? Basically it describes all the new ways of getting news out there. Our generation is so used to the internet there isn’t much of a problem with this. The chapter just basically goes into more depth on how to use these new media outlets correctly. They are:

1. The Internet

2. Using Webcasts

3. Using Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace)

4. Blogs

They close the chapter with how the role of traditional media (newspapers, magazines, etc.) are still commonly used and should not be ignored even with all the new computer and internet outlets.

 

PR Writing Reading Notes Chapter 11

Chapter 11 in our text is all about getting along with journalists. This is very important in public relations so that they will want to work with you and publish your stories.

The most important part of this chapter to me was what journalists complain the most about to not let those happen in my future writing. These 5 things are as follows:

1. Lack of familiarity with editorial requirements and format.

2. Poorly written materials

3. Too many unsolicited emails and phone calls.

4. Lack of knowledge about their product or service.

5. Repeated calls and follow ups.

 

PR Writing Reading Notes Chapter 10

Chapter 10 in our book covers distributing news to the media. Some key points are as follows:
1. Essential tools for compiling media lists are media directories.

2. It is important to update your media lists constantly as journalists commonly change jobs rapidly.

3. Tip Sheets are a great way to let publicists know what kind of material is needed.

4. Email is becoming a very popular way to communicate, but first you should establish a relationship before just strictly emailing.

5. Snail mail is still used to distribute materials, but now more commonly in CD ROM form.

 

Reading Notes PR Writing Week 9 October 21, 2010

This week we read the chapter that discusses writing for radio and television. Radio lacks the glamour of television so the writing and voice needs to be very descriptive to give the listener all the details. Radio news releases require more concise writing and a conversational tone. Audio News Releases include soundbites, music, and sound effects to make them more interesting. Public service announcements are used by public agencies and nonprofit groups and are usually shorter. RMT’s (Radio Media Tours) are a way to reach a lot of audiences with one interview. TV news releases must contain visual elements and sound to capture the attention of the viewers.

 

Reading Notes PR Writing Week 8

This week we read Chapter 8. This chapter was really interesting to me because it focuses on selecting publicity photos and graphics. What is the first thing you notice when you look at a publication before you read it? The pictures and graphics. Hearing their view on how to select them was very interesting to me. They discuss the importance of them and the components of a good photo. Some key components are technical quality, subject matter, composition, action, scale, camera angle, lighting and timing, and color. They describe the best ways to work with and select a photographer, and how to write photo captions. Other graphics are important also like charts, diagrams, renderings, and clip art.

 

Reading Notes PR Writing Week 7

Chapter 7 and our reading for this week was about creating news features and Op-Ed. It discussed how to plan for your feature story, and the different types, (Case Study, Application Story, Research Study, Backgrounder,Personality Profile, Historical Piece) Then they defined the different parts of the feature such as:

-The Headline

-The Lead

-The Body

-The Summary

-Photos and Graphics

and then told you different places to have the published like a newspaper, general magazines, specialty/trade magazines, and internal publications. The authors then tell us how to write an Op-Ed, which means opposite of the editorial page. It shows a topic in a different view. These are seen in letters to the editor and are usually less than 200 words to be published.
